THINK FIRST!
Lansing Neurosurgery is proud to sponsor the Greater Lansing chapter of Think First, an organization devoted to preventing brain and spinal cord injuries in children.
Every year, more than 1,000,000 children suffer a brain injury; 1 in 10 will live with moderate to severe impairments. Realizing that most of these injuries are preventable, neurosurgeons throughout the country collaborated with professional educators to create Think First, an award-winning program to teach children the importance of “thinking first” to prevent injury. Through research-based educational programming and Voices for Injury Prevention (VIP) speakers, ThinkFirst provides the knowledge and skills for children and teens to make safe decisions. Programs are designed to reinforce the injury prevention message at crucial intervals to encourage young people to think first before engaging in risky behavior.
Lansing Neurosurgery’s health education professionals travel throughout the Lansing area presenting 90-minute Think First for Kids sessions to third-grade classrooms. The curriculum is designed to help young children develop lifelong safety habits to lessen their risk of sustaining brain, spinal cord or other traumatic injuries. It focuses on age appropriate explanations of the physiology of the brain and spinal cord, and on safety and injury prevention.
To reinforce the Think First message, eah participating child receives a free properly-fitted bicycle helmet of their own.
The full cost of the Think First for Kids program is sponsored by Lansing Neurosurgery neurosurgeons for our area schools.
